The Cary floors we see most are 1990s and early-2000s builder oak — 2 1/4 or 3 1/4-inch strip, site-finished in a golden oak stain that has not aged well next to today's paint colors. The wood underneath is usually in excellent shape.
The second category is engineered flooring in newer Preston and Amberly homes, where the question is whether there is enough wear layer to sand. We measure at a vent or threshold before quoting rather than guessing, because the answer decides whether the job is a refinish or a recoat.
Cary housing stock, floor by floor
Preston and MacGregor Downs homes from the late 80s and 90s were built well, with solid oak over plywood on crawlspace or basement. Those sand beautifully and hold a new color for a decade.
Amberly, Carpenter Village, and Cary Park bring more engineered product and more open floor plans, which raises a practical question: with no doorways to break the run, the whole main level has to be done at once. We plan those around a weekend and a garage entrance.
Downtown Cary's older bungalows near Academy and Chatham are the outliers — narrow-board pine and oak, often with additions that meet the original floor at an awkward transition. That is matching work, which is what we are known for.

A Cary project
Preston — curved balcony rail and 1,900 sq ft refinish
A two-story foyer with an existing balcony overlook, where the original builder rail had been damaged and replaced badly by a previous contractor. The client wanted the rail rebuilt to follow the curve properly and the floors brought to a consistent color throughout.
The rail was laminated from thin white oak strips around a form built for that exact radius, then shaped and finished to match the treads. The main level and upstairs hall were sanded and finished in the same visit so the balcony, stairs, and floor all read as one piece of wood.

Because the shop is in Cary, samples and small repairs can be handled without a full mobilization — useful when the job is one stained room or a single damaged stair tread.
Scheduling in Cary works around the way these houses are built. Open main levels with no doorway breaks mean the whole floor comes out of service at once, so we sequence the sand for a Tuesday start, keep the garage entry live, and have the family back on the finish by Friday evening. Water-based finish is walkable in two hours and holds furniture after twenty-four, which is why nearly every Cary job we quote uses it rather than oil. Pets and area rugs wait the full week while the coating cures to hardness.
Cary questions
Working in Cary.
Cary is our home base — the shop is here, so most Cary jobs are a ten minute drive. We work Preston, Lochmere, MacGregor Downs, and the newer builds along Green Level. Being this close means Elder can stop by mid-job to check stain color in your actual daylight.
Cary's newer homes are tight and well sealed, which makes winter heating unusually drying — indoor humidity can fall below 25 percent. That is when wide-plank white oak gaps. A whole-house humidifier or two portable units holding 35 to 55 percent will keep your boards where they belong.
Cary is the fastest town on our board. We can usually estimate within a day or two, and because there is no drive time to absorb, we can often slot a Cary job into a gap between larger projects. Ask about the current schedule when Elder comes out to measure.
