Where a repair usually gives itself away
Four things: board width, saw cut, species, and color. A 2 1/4-inch red oak strip floor from the 1950s does not accept a modern 3 1/4-inch plank without a visible line. We source to the original dimension, then weave the new boards in on staggered ends rather than patching a rectangle.
Color is the last step, not the first. New wood takes stain differently than wood that has been oxidizing for fifty years, so we mix and test on offcuts of the same board until it reads the same under your light.
Species we match regularly
Red oak, white oak, heart pine, maple, and the occasional Brazilian redwood or other import that was installed in one room and never repeated. When a species is no longer available, we tint and finish a close relative to match rather than pretending otherwise.

Removed walls that left a gap in the floor, pet stains soaked into the boards, subfloor squeaks, radiator and vent cutouts, transitions where carpet used to be, and fire or plumbing patches.

Often, yes. Once the leak is fixed and the boards dry back to normal moisture content — usually two to four weeks — most cupping flattens on its own and sands out clean. We meter the wood before touching it. Sanding a floor that is still wet locks the damage in permanently.
Seasonal gaps that close in summer should be left alone; filler cracks out when the boards swell. Permanent gaps get slivers of matching wood glued in and sanded flush, which holds where filler does not. For whole-floor gapping, humidity control usually solves more than carpentry will.
Almost always. Pet stains, burns, water rings, transitions where a wall came out, and split boards can all be cut out and rewoven board by board. Replacement only makes sense once damage is widespread or the subfloor itself is rotted. Repair typically costs a fraction of a new floor.
That is the part we are known for. We match species, cut, width, and grain direction, stagger the new boards into the old so no seam runs straight, then sand and finish the whole room as one surface. Blending Brazilian redwood into red oak is a job we have done more than once.
